Buying time

By Gitanjali Singh

We are extremely busy with our lives, our schedules, our errands. But do we have to be that alarmingly busy with our little ones who yet have to understand the word busy. Do they deserve it? Let’s not lose our priorities, let’s not be so much in touch with machines and materials that we lose or forget the touch of a little soft hand, the hug from a fragile body, a smile which comes so easily, eyes which doesn’t see anything but colors of the big sky and you. I was asked a question in my teaching career by a three years old” Why do my parents send me her everyday and then take me back?”I was honestly in loss of words for the first time in 23 years of my preschooling career. Then gathering my wits together and pushing back my tears I said to her,’ here we can become naughty, nice, play learn and have loads of fun…So she was happy and never asked me that question again. A child used to get pocket money substantial enough to buy goodies of his choice on the way to school. One day when his parents were busy on their machines their inseparable laptops, all apps mobiles, he came up to them and asked,”How much do you earn for an hour?”They were surprised but since they were busy, they did not pay much heed to the question and casually replied 250 to 300/-. Again they got busy; the child went up to his room. After a few days the little boy asked his parents if he would get additional 100Rs to his pocket money. He got a shouting and that it was enough and he should go up to his room to do something constructive. He should concentrate on his studies than anything else. He made a sad face and with painful eyes he went up to his room, sat down on his bed, took out his piggy bank and counted his savings. Meanwhile, his parents who were busy looked at each other and decided to talk to their child. They entered his room, sat down beside him and said that they were sorry for being hard on him. They said, “We are sorry but we have so much of work and are so busy you understand, don’t you! You are a big boy!”Excuse Me! Big boy…What is the definition of big boy… understand…So they asked, “Why did you need an extra 100”. The child hesitated and said “I was running sort of that much”. The parents had a surprised look in their eyes.”Why did you need that much money?”The boy said, “I need 600/- to buy one hour of your time.”
