Kathmandu, August 23:

The daughter of a diabetic patient who had been admitted to the Norvic Escorts International Hospital has said her mother lost her five tolas of gold (earrings) from the Curative Care Unit (CCU) on August 15. The patient Mani Thapa, a resident of Butwal Municipality-14, was admitted on July 30. She died at the hospital this morning. Her daughter Hema Rana said her mother had asked her whether she had received the ornaments the nurses had taken off from her ears when she was admitted to CCU 207 from the standard ward-223 on August 15. Hema claims she had seen the ornaments on her mother till she was transferred to the CCU.

No visitors are allowed in the CCU during the night hours.

“Taking note of the reputation of the hospital, we complained about the theft to the authorities

in charge, but they dilly-dallied about taking any action. We then filed a written complaint with the general manager on Friday,” said Hema. The hospital’s general manager Surendra Man Shakya said that with the hospital administration failing to find out anything about the theft, he has requested the ward police station at Anamnagar to look into the case. In the letter to the police, Shakya has given the names of five nurses who were on duty the night of the theft. According to the hospital policy, patients are not be be admitted into wards decked with jewellery, but Thapa’s relatives said they were not informed about such a policy.
