Milan basketball
KATHMANDU: Ashmit and Bhabati scored six points each as New Summit School defeated Prithvi School 16-13 in the day’s first match at the third Milan Inter-school Girls’ Basketball Tournament. In other matches, GENS thrashed Unique School 34-4 riding on Nisha Thapa’s 12 points; Sujini Tamang netted 27 points as Ideal Model vanquished hosts Milan 53-7; Gyan Niketan outplayed South Point 17-9 in which Richa scored six points for Gyan Niketan; and Manisha scored 19 in Gyanodaya Bal Batika’s 46-14 win over Holy Garden. — HNS
Kandel in SAGKF
KATHMANDU: Sitaram Kandel, president of Nepal Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Association, has been nominated as the senior vice president of 11-member South Asian Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation (SAGKF) formed on August 25. Nepal, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan are the member countries of the SAGKF. Kandel has been the council member of the Asian Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation since January 2005. — HNS
NAAA turns to NAA
KATHMANDU: Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) has decided to remove ‘amateur’ from their name after the international federation did so. Now the NAAA will be known as Nepal Athletics Association (NAA). At a press meet organised today, the NAA also released the year-long programmes, which includes six events — four in Kathmandu and one each in Ilam and Panauti. The NAA also nominated various persons in the association — AIG Amar Singh Thapa, Shiva Shankar Ranjit and Rajiv Bikram Shah (vice presidents), and Mahendra Nath Karmacharya, Narayan Pradhan, Olympian Arjun Pandit, Komal Oli, and Dil Bahadur Bam (members). Veteran athletes Baikuntha Manandhar and Gajaraj Khadka, Bikram Pandey, and Gunter Lange have been awarded with the honorable membership. Lange is the IAF senior lecturer and president of Nepal German Athletics Project. — HNS
Squash tourney
LALITPUR: Gyanendra Khanal, Anil Singh, and Hira Bahadur Thapa advanced to the next round of the National Squash Tournament, which has been organised by Nepal Squash and Rackets Association to select the players for the 10th South Asian Games. Khanal beat Lal Bahadur Gurung 3-1, Singh outplayed Rishi Agrawal 3-0 and Thapa defeated Prajjwal Pradhan 3-1. The tournament runs through August 31. — HNS
Ratna Shield
LALITPUR: Akshaya Rana scored the winner as Malpi School defeated Siddhi Ganesh 1-0 in the Ratna Shield Inter-school Football Tournament. The remaining matches were shifted to Sano Gaucharan due to technical reasons. Kiran Rana Magar scored a hat-trick in Adarsha School’s 7-0 win over Green Land. In the other match, Panga School beat Buddha Prakash 2-0 on goals from Diwas Maharjan and Bishwas Lama. Birendra Sainik defeated Siddhartha Vanasthali 5-3 in tie-breaker, after a 1-1 draw. — HNS
AXN snooker
KATHMANDU: AXN Snooker Club is organisng the AXN Snooker Tournament from August 31 to mark its first anniversary. Around 150 cueists are taking part in the event. The winner will receive Rs 10,000, while the runners-up will get Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,000. The highest breaker and the best player will be awarded with Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 respectively. — HNS
ITF branch formed
KATHMANDU: Nepal International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) formed its branch Balkot Taekwondo Dojang Committee under the presidentship of ITF coach Niroj Raj Poudel. Other members of the committee are Madhukar Poudel (vice president), Milan Shrestha (secretary), Pankaj Poudel (treasurer), and members Sampurna Shrestha, Shyam Sundar Shrestha, Nabin Shrestha, Namaraj Khatiwada and Raj Kumar Sinjal Magar. — HNS
Gyanodaya beat LA
LALITPUR: Gyanodaya Bal Batika defeated Little Angels’ School 1-0 in the final of the sixth Valleywide Inter-school Football Tournament organised by Gyanodaya Bal Batika to mark the 78th birthday of Queen Mother Ratna and 41st Children’s Day. Rajib Gauchan scored the winner in the 68th minute. Nutan Gauchan of LA was declared the best player. — HNS
