Kathmandu Almost all Nepalis are familiar with the rise of Jung Bahadur, the founder of the Rana dynasty in Nepal, and conspiracies woven against king and courtiers in palaces. And based on the historical events of the rise of Jung Bahadur, director Utkal Thapa has successfully unravelled those conspiracies in Junge, through the modern-day characters. Junge (Suraj Singh Thakuri), is a reckless youth of Birgunj, who roams around aimlessly and does whatever he likes. There is a sudden change in his after his father is killed in a crossfire. Silently dragged into the conspiracies, he rises to power. With the present-day story line, the movie reveals how conspiracies are made in palaces and how people struggle to gain power. Director Thapa has successfully infused history with the modern day crimes such as smuggling of drugs, and red sandalwood among others. Presenting historical facts in modern context is not an easy job, but Thapa as a director has done the job convincingly. As per the cast, Nazir Hussain steals the show with his role as a drug addict. His witty oratory skills make you laugh out loud. Naresh Poudel in the role of a powerful king of Birgunj is convincing. His movements as a king, his expressions — proud and confident — are noteworthy. Reecha Sharma has tried her best to fit in the role of the queen. Her dress up, eye contact and deceiving nature are aptly presented. Thakuri, however can’t get into his character’s skin. He is more like the celebrity ‘Suraj Singh Thakuri’ rather than Junge on screen. He is bulky, his body should have toned down a little to give that impression of the history’s Jung Bahadur. To sum up, Thakuri has delivered just an average performance. The background score during the fighting scenes is loud and nuisance to your ears. Yet one scene that impresses you immediately is the firing of bullet in forest. You feel the bullet before your eyes, a rare experience while watching Nepali films.
