'Slight improvement' on Shashanka Koirala's condition

KATHMANDU: The condition of Nepali Congress General Secretary Shashanka Koirala has slightly improved this evening but he is still critical, according to sources at Om Hospital. It has been learned that Koirala showed some reflex and responded to verbal commands of the attending medical personnel, moving his fingers and opening his eyes. The 58-year-old medical doctor turned politician has been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital on advanced life support. 'He is still on ventilator and inotropic support with blood pressure of 120/50 mm Hg,' the hospital said in a statement this evening. Currently, he is on sedation for mechanical support but responding to verbal commands. Earlier the hospital had revealed that Koirala, who was admitted to the hospital at 8 pm yesterday, suffered from aspiration pneumonia followed by septic shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.  He is under broad spectrum antibiotics to treat bilateral chest infection and septicemia. Though derangement in the liver and renal function was observed earlier, the latest reports showed an improvement in his renal function 'with three litres of urine since this morning.' Despite this, his condition is still critical with stable vital functions, the hospital made it care. 'We are continuing with the same medical treatment under observation and care of the team of medical doctors from Om Hospital and medical specialists from different hospitals of the Valley,' the hospital said.
