Swollen rivers engulf human settlements, cripple life in Saptari

Rajbiraj, July 24 Incessant rainfall for the past few days has inundated hundreds of houses in several VDCs of the eastern hill districts. Rampura Malahaniya and Tilathi VDCs have been turned into islands due to floods in several rivers. After the swollen Jita and Khado rivers started enclosing settlements at Rampura Malahaniya – 6 and Tilathi – 8, the people have not been able to come out of the settlements. According to the sources, as many as 500 households of Rampura and around 200 households of Tilathi – 8 have been trapped in the flood. Flood gushed into almost all Dalit houses at Malahaniya, said a local Krishna Yadav. As the locals of these VDCS face starvation, locals from adjoining VDCs have started to provide foodstuff and other essentials in boats from today morning, he said. Several settlements at Sakarpura, Launiya, Barsain and Madhepura among other VDCs also have been enclosed with the flood in Khado and Jeeta Rivers. “We have been unable to manage or purchase daily essentials due to flood,” regretted the victims. According to Ram Krishna Yadav of Rampura Malahaniya-4, as many as 500 houses in Sakarpura VDC, 250 of Bishahariya VDC, 200 houses of Launiya have been affected due to the flood. Similarly, 300 houses of Tilathi, 200 of Lokharam, 700 of Rampura Malahaniya and more than 200 households of Koiladi Barsain have been inundated. According to locals and police personnel, Mahuli, Amaha, Triyuga and other rivers have gushed into the settlements of Phattepur of Saptakoshi Municipality, Koiladi, Topa, Mahadeva, Bhagawatpur, Bathanaha, Bhardaha, Portaha, Bhairawa, Pakari, Dighawa, Deuri Bharuwa VDCs besides wards 5, 8 and 10 of Rajbiraj Municipality. The flood victims requested the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee to manage boats and makeshift tents for their safety when they reached the site to distribute foodstuff to flood victims at Sakarpura, Rampura Malahaniya, and Bishahariya among other areas today. “As the flood gushed into our houses and all our belongings including grains and clothes are soaked, we have nothing left. Please help rescue us from the threshold of death,” said Shiva Chandra Yadav, a flood victim of Koiladi Barasain – 4, who came to the main road across by swimming across the flooded river. Locals said that a team including the chiefs of district-based security agencies, Red Cross Chairperson, among others, took stock of the three VDCs and distributed relief. CDO Bal Dev Gautam had headed the team. Meanwhile, the flooded Mahuli River gushed into as many as 40 houses of Mainkaderi-5 when the embankment of the river burst today morning.
