Kathmandu Gionee S6s is the latest smartphone from Gionee stable which aims to rank at the top in the very competitive mid-range market. On August 22, Gionee launched the Gionee S6s, their camera centric phone in the Nepali market for Rs 25,999. The phone is exceptionally good at taking selfies but is it a good phone altogether? Let’s find out. Design The design of the Gionee S6s is what makes the phone stand out. Most of the phone is made from metal giving it a premium look. The back of the phone also houses a finger print scanner and the entire phone is just 8.3mm thick. Simply put, the design of the phone will raise eyebrows and will get admiration from people around you. Display The Gionee S6s comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display and has very good colour reproduction and viewing angles. The phone has above average outdoor visibility too. With 401 pixels per inch, the phone will satisfy even the pixel peepers. The smooth 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass that sits on top of the Full HD IPS panel further adds to the experience of using the phone. Performance If there’s something that is disappointing about the Gionee S6s, it has to be the performance of the phone. The phone is powered by Mediatek MT6753 Octa Core CPU clocked at 1.3GHz. It is coupled with 3GB of RAM and has 32GB storage. While using the phone, one can expect an occasional lag especially while multi-tasking. The issue is more likely due to poor RAM management and can be fixed with a software update. Also, the phone runs really hot during extensive usage. However, for day-to-day use, the phone runs perfectly fine. Software Gionee S6s runs a custom skin on top of Android 6.0, dubbed Amigo 3.2. The phone packs all the features you’d get from stock Android and more. One cool trick in the phone is the ability to change the theme of the phone according to the surroundings. Like most of the Chinese phones, Gionee S6s doesn’t have app drawer which takes time getting used to. Also, the Amigo 3.2 UI isn’t as refined as it should be. Launching apps and closing them at times can be really buggy. Camera The S6s is marketed heavily as a selfie centric phone and rightfully so! The phone houses an 8MP selfie camera with good colour reproduction and also includes high CRI flash. The front flash helps selfies come out good even in pitch darkness. There is also a plethora of filters embedded into the camera app to make photos come out beautiful. The 13MP rear camera sourced from Sony produces decent images. The day light photos resolve a lot of detail and can be easily mistaken for a photo taken from a phone class above it. But the same cannot be said about photos taken in low-light situations. The photos taken in low light scenario are often too noisy. Connectivity The Gionee S6s is a Hybrid Dual-SIM phone. You can either use two SIM cards (One Micro and the other Nano) or one Nano SIM card and Micro-SD card for memory expansion. The phone supports 4G LTE and also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, WLAN Direct and GPS. Battery The Gionee S6s is powered by 3150mAh Li-Polymer battery. For a phone with a 5.5-inch Full HD display, the battery capacity is perfectly adequate. The phone lacks any kind of quick charging which is very disappointing. It took me two and a half hour to fully charge the phone from zero. A moderate user needs to charge the phone every other day while heavy users will have to charge the phone every day. Conclusion Gionee S6s is a good mid-ranger. The phone has great display, good camera and is really well built. However, it is let down by poor performance and lack of any kind of quick charging. Also, I think the asking price of Rs 25,999 is just a little too steep. If you are in the market for a phone which can take good photos, has a good screen and above average battery life, you can’t go wrong with the Gionee S6s.
