KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital's senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC on Saturday issued an eight-day ultimatum to meet his demand and warned that he would resort to a fast-unto-death, for the ninth time in the past few years, if the demand was not heeded. Organising a press conference at the TUTH today, Dr KC served the ultimatum of September 18 to the government to meet his single demand - implementing the four-point pact signed with him on July 24. He said he would resort to the next round of hunger strike from the next day if the agreement was not implemented by then (September 18). He had just ended the eighth fast-unto-death on July 25 after signing the four-point agreement with the government. Putting forth major four demands, Dr KC on July 10 had begun his hunger strike at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Among other demands related to reforms in Nepal's medical education sector, Dr KC has been demanding that Chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Lokman Singh Karki and another CIAA Commissioner Raj Narayan Pathak be impeached as they promoted corruption in the sector. While breaking the fast in July, Dr KC had agreed to put off the demand as the matter was under the jurisprudence of the Parliament and a proposal seeking discussion on the issue had already entered the Parliament. But, Dr KC raised the issue again today as the proposal of public importance about his allegations against Karki was not discussed in the House yet. Nepali Congress lawmaker Gagan Kumar Thapa, seconded by another NC lawmaker Dhanaraj Gurung and CPN Maoist Centre lawmaker Shyam Shrestha, had registered the proposal at the House demanding that the legislative body discuss accusations made by Dr KC. The proposal, however, was reportedly dropped as Thapa was made the Minister for Health in the incumbent government and a minister could not file such a motion at the House.
