SALLERI: The body of  octogenarian Min Bahadur Sherchan, who died at the base camp of Mt Everest on Saturday afternoon, has been airlifted from Lukla to Kathmandu via Fishtail air at 10:00 am on Sunday.

The last rites of Sherchan would be performed as per the Buddhist ritual after postmortem at TU Teaching Hospital, it is learnt.

Sherchan,  born in Myagdi district in June 1931, had successfully scaled Mt Everest in 2008, becoming the ever-oldest man to reach atop the peak.

It took him 340 days to complete the mission.

However, the record was broken by 80-year-old Japanese mountaineer Yuchiro Miura in 2013.

On April 16, Sherchan had set off for the Everest expedition with six other members for reclaiming  the title 'the oldest man to scale the summit'.
