SOLUKHUMBU: Flights at the Phaplu Airport in the Solukhumbu district have been halted due to unfavourable weather for the past 13 days. The last flight to take off from the airport was that of Nepal Airlines on June 27 after which the airport has taken on a deserted look, according to Ganesh Shrestha, the incharge of Nepal Airlines' Phaplu Acting Station. Thick fog and regular bouts of heavy downpours have attributed for the Airports' shutdown. The voters, who had arrived in the district for the second phase of local level elections, are unable to return to Kathmandu since the airport has been brought to a standstill, Shrestha added. Flights at the Lukla airport in the district have also been affected due to bad weather. The airport operates some flights in the morning, but is not able to meet the demand, Tara Air's Lukla incharge Phinuru Sherpa shared. According to Sherpa, despite the schedule of five to six flights per day, only one or two flights are able to take off depending upon the weather. The district has four airports, but the airports in Kangeldanda and Syangboche have remained out of operation for a long time.
