KATHMANDU: As the government prepares to airlift Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging a hunger strike at Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) in Jumla, protests have erupted at the vicinity of the institution. The protests have taken a serious form as dozens of people have become injured. Police baton charged the protesters within the hospital premises, and fired 12 rounds of tear gas shells within 10 minutes to contain the mob. Thirty to forty students and nurses have been injured, according to sources. Some of the students have also become unconscious. The emergency ward at KAHS is completely occupied. According to Jumla District Police Office, a police personnel, whose identity is not disclosed, has been injured in the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at KAHS. Students and locals are protesting against the government's decision to airlift Dr KC to Kathmandu. They have demanded the government to carry out talks and fulfil Dr KC's demand in Jumla itself, before taking him to Kathmandu. Dr KC is on a hunger strike protesting the Medical Education Bill in its current form.
