Dhangadi, June 3 Biological embankment was constructed to prevent soil erosion during monsoon in four places along the Mohana River in Kailali. The embankment was constructed using bamboo at Naklipur and Lalitpur of Dhangadi sub-metropolis and Mohanpur and Shivapur of Kailari Rural Municipality. The local government and Disaster Management Programme operated by Nepal Red Cross assisted in construction of the biological embankment. A one-kilometre long embankment has been constructed with Rs 1.8 million at Naklipur. Dhangadi Sub-metropolis has assisted with Rs 1 million and disaster management programme with Rs 780,000 for the same. Naklipur Community Disaster Management Committee Chair Devraj Kharel, said the Mohana River had been eroding 30 to 40 metres arable land every year for the past 10 to 12 years in Naklipur. “Around 25 bigha fertile land has been destroyed till date,” he said. “It is said that the fertile land of 150 farmers will be safe after construction of the biological embankment,” he said. Similarly, a 200-metre long biological embankment has been constructed with Rs 1 million under the disaster management programme at Lalitpur of Dhangadi sub-metropolis. Embankment has also been constructed at Shivapur and Mohanapur of Kailari Rural Municipality. The rural municipality has assisted with Rs 800,000 and disaster management programme with Rs 426,000 for dam construction.
