KATHMANDU, JULY 8

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of eastern and central Nepal on Wednesday, with thunderstorms and gusty winds expected to accompany active monsoon conditions in several provinces.

The department said one or two places in the hilly and Terai areas of Koshi Province, and the hilly regions of Bagmati, Gandaki and Sudurpashchim provinces are likely to receive heavy rainfall during the day. Overnight, the risk of heavy rain is expected to extend to parts of Madhesh Province and the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

The weather is expected to remain generally cloudy across the country. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in many parts of Koshi, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces, the hilly regions of Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali, parts of Madhesh Province, and the Terai belts of Bagmati and Gandaki. Light to moderate rain or snowfall is also forecast at a few places in the Himalayan region.

The department has also warned of gusty winds at a few places in Madhesh Province and the Terai of Lumbini Province, particularly during the night.

According to the latest meteorological analysis, Nepal remains under the influence of monsoon winds. The monsoon trough lies south of its average position over eastern Nepal and near its normal position over the western part of the country.

In the Kathmandu Valley, temperatures are expected to range between 27°C and 29°C with a 60 percent chance of rain during the day. Similar rainfall probability has been forecast for Pokhara, Biratnagar, Dharan, Dhangadi, Nepalgunj, Birendranagar, Okhaldhunga, Dhankuta and Taplejung.

The department has urged residents, particularly those living in flood- and landslide-prone areas, to remain alert as localized heavy rainfall could trigger weather-related hazards.
