KATHMANDU, JUNE 14
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in several hilly and mountainous parts of the country today, with weather experts warning that localized downpours could occur despite generally partial cloud cover across much of the country.
According to the 24-hour weather bulletin issued on Sunday morning, the Himalayan region is expected to remain generally cloudy, while hilly areas and the Terai of Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces will experience partly cloudy conditions. Sudurpashchim's Terai is likely to see mainly fair weather.
Moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at a few places in the hilly and Himalayan regions, while isolated rainfall is also expected in parts of the Terai of Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.
The department said Nepal is currently under the partial influence of an upper-level western trough, local winds and easterly winds, creating favourable conditions for convective rainfall and thunderstorms.
Pokhara, Kathmandu among likely rain-hit areas
Among major cities, Pokhara is expected to receive the highest rainfall activity, with moderate rain and thundershowers likely during both day and night and a 40 per cent probability of precipitation. Kathmandu is also forecast to witness light rain and thunderstorms, with a 30 per cent chance of rainfall.
Other eastern hill districts, including Taplejung, Jiri, Dhankuta and Okhaldhunga, are also likely to experience moderate rain and thundershowers.
Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to remain high across the southern plains. Bhairahawa and Janakpur may record maximum temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius, while Dhangadhi, Nepalgunj, Simara and Biratnagar are also likely to experience hot conditions.
Rain to continue tonight
For tonight, partly cloudy conditions are forecast across Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, with chances of moderate rainfall and thunderstorms at a few places in Koshi Province and isolated rainfall in Bagmati, Gandaki and the Himalayan districts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim.
The department has advised the public, particularly those in hilly and mountainous regions, to remain alert for possible thunderstorms, localized downpours and weather-related disruptions.
