Kathmandu, October 11:

The Nepal Teachers’ Association stated today that handing over of government schools to the communities would result in collapse of the education system in the country.

Issuing a press release today, the NTA has urged the government to put off the plans of handing over the management of the government schools to the community.

“Handing over the management of the government schools to the communities will demoralise the teachers, who play a great role in enhancing the educational system of the country and the goal of achieving universal primary education by 2015 will fall short,” the statement said. The government’s plan to withdraw from the management of schools is against the target of universal primary education set by the Millennium Development Goal (MDG), the NTA said.

If the payment for teachers are done as donation and assistance for their labour, they will lose enthusiasm towards their jobs and this will fuel dissatisfaction among the teachers, the statement adds. The teachers’ body condemned the murder of Nagendra Prasad Yadhav, a primary school teacher, last Tuesday in Mahottari and demanded all concerned to respect humanity and end such acts.
