SINDHUPALCHOCK: While the incidence of swine flu is increasing in many countries, the Chinese side has been on high alert at the Tatopani border point. The Chinese government is permitting Nepalese and foreigners to enter Tibet autonomous region only with masks. This has been done after an Italian tourist, who had entered Khasa from Tatopani on Saturday, fell ill suddenly. With the objective of preventing swine flu affected people from entering Tibet, an 'infrared thermometer' that automatically measures the temperature, has been installed in the Chinese Immigration Department. The Chinese side has been barring those with fluctuations in normal temperature from crossing the border. Meanwhile, department chief Bijay Poudel said that it was unclear whether the woman has been infected with the disease. He added that the Chinese side has permitted the Italian tourists, who were stopped along with the sick woman in Khasa (Jangbu), to move ahead to Lhasa after her health rejuvenated. Poudel said, citing the Chinese officials that China went on the alert after swine flu was detected in China. The Jangbu Hospital has confirmed that the woman has not been infected with the disease and she has been permitted to proceed to Lhasa, Poudel said. Though the Chinese side has been on high alert, the Nepali side has not shown any interest in this regard. The only precaution being taken is the masks being worn by the immigration employees of Nepal while dealing with the foreigners. Meanwhile, chief of district health office Dr Rajendra Panta said a team of physicians was heading there on Thursday. Along the Tatopani border point, hundreds of local businessmen and other Nepalese cross over to Khasa in Tibet daily. According to the report of the immigration department, every day 50-150 persons travel to Tibet from the point while the same number enter Nepal since the commencement of the tourism season from mid-May.
