KATHMANDU: Unified Maoists-affiliated Young Communist League (YCL) is planning to launch a nationwide protest against President Ram Baran Yadav's move to reinstate Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal.
Speaking at an interaction programme on Thursday, Ganesh Man Pun Sagar, president of YCL said that they were busy briefing the district level party cadres on the latest political developments. Sagar said,”Initially, we will be focused on the awareness campaign about the President's move, foreign intervention in state affairs and formation of the new government, which has overlooked the popular mandate.”
Sagar, further, said YCL would mobilise the youths across the nation to protest against the President's move, adding that they would fight to maintain civilian supremacy as they had fought for republicanism, putting an end to two and a half century-old monarchy .”
Saying that they would use peaceful means in the protest, he said, ”Our main agenda is peace and timely writing of the new constitution, by upholding civilian supremacy.” He also blamed the government for undermining the contribution of the youth to the political transition.
Central committee member of the CPN-UML, Gorkana Bista underlined the need for broader consensus among the political parties to move ahead. He said,”we cannot go ahead if we sideline the CPN-Maoist from the peace process and constitution writing task.”
