KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 03

The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has fined 23 firms in the last three days during its market monitoring.

The department had monitored 46 businesses in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. According to the department, it collected around Rs 220,000 in fines from the firms for engaging in illegal business activities.

The department had monitored 14 businesses in different areas of Kathmandu on Sunday and fined eight businesses around Rs 110,000. Swarnakar Food Store and Akanksha Store were fined Rs 5,000 each. Similarly, Bhudev Store was fined Rs 20,000, SN Furniture Centre Rs 10,000, Suman Radhika Store Rs 15,000, Sasto Pasal Pvt Ltd Rs 15,000, Jerry Foods Packaging Industries Rs 20,000 and Prabhu Liquor Rs 20,000.

The department also destroyed expired food items and alcohol worth Rs 12,421 on Sunday. Five businesses were warned to improve their practices that day.

Similarly, 15 businesses were monitored on Monday.

The monitoring was carried out in seven construction material shops, one food shop as well as six hardware shops and one paint shop. Imadol Hardware was fined Rs 5,000, Anya Enterprises Rs 10,000 and Mainali Hardware Centre Construction Materials Rs 5,000. Expired items worth around Rs 31,916 were destroyed from the paint shop. Similarly, 11 businesses were directed to improve immediately.

The department monitored 17 businesses on Tuesday. Kisan Trading Grocery, Kalika Grocery Store, Shriyaj Store, Saibaba Food and Grocery Suppliers, Family Enterprises, Sanam Grocery Store, Chhahra Traders, Isani Store and Samu Grocery Store were fined Rs 5,000 each.

Similarly, a fine of Rs 8,000 was slapped on Pushpa Suppliers, Rs 15,000 on Lama Food Store and Rs 20,000 on Krishna Store.

The department destroyed goods worth Rs 2,715 on Tuesday and instructed four businesses to improve their practices.

The department had monitored most of the food stores in different areas of the valley in the three days. Currently, five monitoring teams of the department are visiting the market on a daily basis.
