In a blow to the Koirala family, Amrit Aryal was elected as the Morang district unit chief of the Nepali Congress (NC) today. Among the contenders was Ashok Koirala, who enjoyed the blessing of the Koirala family while Aryal was backed by their detractors.

Koirala, who is the sitting member of the National Assembly had also been president of the district unit for the last 20 years. He had declared his candidacy a month back while Aryal did it on June 29. Those backing Aryal included central leader Mahesh Acharya who himself was elected as party delegate to the upcoming General Convention by a solitary vote.
