Goat farming

BABIYACHAUR: A cooperative and commercial goat farming scheme launched in altogether 14 VDCs of Myagdi district and it has helped raise the incomes of many poor families in the district. Around 800 farmers in VDCs including Takam, Dana, Kuhu, Histan, Bhurung Tatopani and Ghatan have been included in the cooperative commercial goat farming, according to district livestock services office chief Dr Prem Sharma. The scheme was launched under a special income-generating programme launched three years ago for ultra-poor families. Farmer Tek Bahadur Gurung said their economic situation has started improving after goat farming. The district livestock services office provides a group of 50 farmers Rs 150,000 to purchase goats and Rs 30,000 to construct enclosures. There are 36 such groups in the district. With the scheme having gained momentum, import of goats from other districts to meet local meat demand has gone down. — RSS
