Hoteliers hike rates

POKHARA: Around 400 hoteliers in Ghandruk, Bhorepani and Annapurna Base Camp along the Annapurna trail have decided to increase the rates of room rent and food to cope p with the rise in price of commodities. Tourists will be charged Rs 500 per room with attached bathroom, Rs 200 for simple room, and tour guides and porters will have to pay Rs 50 per room. However, the new rates won’t apply to domestic tourists. — RSS

Rasuwa spuds sale hit

RASUWA: Potatoes grown in Rasuwa are unable to reach market centres in Kathmandu and Nuwakot as Pasang Lhamu Highway remains obstructed due to landslides. Potato harvest is facing risk of damage due to lack of storage facility. Rasuwa is considered a potato basket of the region and a bumper harvest of at least 200 metric tonnes of potato is expected in the district this year. — RSS

Maize crop blight

ILAM: Maize crop on hundreds of hectares of land in the northern part of Ilam is affected by a fungal disease called dadhuwa (ranke). The plants have wilted due to the disease. Gopal Khatiwada of Jamuna VDC said maize production was likely to plummet by more than half as compared to last year. The district agriculture development office said the disease has affected maize crop in Pyang, Jamuna, Nayabazaar, Tulbung and Mare Pokhari VDCs. An official at the agriculture office said that it was now too late to apply damage control measures as the crop was already in an initial stage of maturity . — RSS
