M’mar hydro project
YANGON: A Chinese firm will help military-run Myanmar build seven hydro-electric plants with combined power capacity likely to be the biggest in the ASEAN. The junta will team up with China Power Investment Corporation (CPI), one of China’s biggest power producers, to construct the plants in northern Kachin state on the border with China. “Upon completion, all projects are expected to generate 13,360 MW in total,” a newspaper reported. — AFP
World War II road
Ledo (Assam): India has started rebuilding its portion of Stilwell Road, which came up at the height of World War II. This follows talks between China, Myanmar and India on reopening of the historic road for trade and overland transport reaching a crucial stage. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said, “The road would be a dream come true for the people of the northeast. It will boost trade and commerce significantly.” — HNS
