Exports via Kakarbhitta reach Rs 485.2 million in first five months

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 7

Exports of Chhurpi, hardened cheese made from yak milk, through the Mechi Customs Office in Kakarbhitta have increased by 32 percent in the first five months of the current fiscal year 2082/83.

According to Information Officer Ishwor Kumar Humagain, a total of 275,246 kilograms of Chhurpi worth Rs 485.2 million was exported between mid-July and mid-December. In the same period last fiscal year, 217,068 kilograms valued at Rs 367.6 million were exported, marking an increase of Rs 117.6 million in export earnings.

Kakarbhitta remains the main export point for domestically produced Chhurpi, which ranks fourth among the top ten export items from the customs office. Most of the product is exported to Europe and the United States for use as pet food.

General Secretary of the Nepal Chhurpi Producers Association, Rishi Timsina, said Koshi province accounts for around 80 percent of Nepal's total Chhurpi production, adding that the sector has not received adequate government attention despite its export potential.
