Government mulls ration card system

Kathmandu, July 11

The Ministry of Supply (MoS) has formed a six-member committee to study effective implementation of ration card system to ensure the smooth supply of daily essentials.

As per a statement issued by the MoS today, the team formed under the leadership of MoS Joint Secretary Uttam Prasad Nagila comprises representatives from the Ministry of Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation; Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development; Niraj Paudel, director of the Department of Supply Management and Consumer Protection; and Consumer Rights Activist Bimala Khanal as members. Similarly, Prem Prasad Acharya, undersecretary of the MoS, will be the member secretary of the committee.

The Consumer Protection Council, headed by the supply minister, had decided on June 15 to take all necessary steps to ensure smooth supply of daily essentials. To execute the decision of the Consumer Protection Council, Supply Minister Ganesh Man Pun has formed a committee to study the provision of ration card and its implementation.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within three months. The committee will commission study on the rationale of the ration card, practices in the other countries and what steps the government should take for effective and successful implementation of ration card system, according to the MoS statement.
