Govt told to furnish details of approval to Birat Petroleum

KATHMANDU: The Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament on Friday directed the government to furnish details of the Nepal Oil Corporation's decision to let Birat Petroleum Private Limited sell petrol at a higher rate than the NOC.

After the move drew controversies from various stakeholders and members of the public, the House Committee wrote a letter to the Secretary at the Ministry of Supplies today and urged to provide details of the decision including its background, rationale and purpose within three days.

The Committee has cited that the government-owned NOC's decision left members of the public at the receiving end and was likely to render negative effects on the nation's economic and social conditions.

After the NOC approval, the BPPL has been selling petrol at Rs 130 per litre while the NOC has been selling for Rs 99 per litre.
