Hotels open in Biratnagar

Biratnagar, May 9:

Hotel workers, who were protesting since Wednesday here, withdrew their protest from yesterday after they reached an agreement with the hotel owners.

The hotel workers had, earlier, putting forward a 20-point demand like ten per cent increase in wages and service charges protested since Wednesday.

Under the agreement reached between the two sides, the demands of the workers will be fulfilled with effect from June 1, said Ramesh Kumar Pyakurel, coordinator of the Workers’ Joint Struggle Committee.

They reached an agreement after a five hour-long marathon round of talks among the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) and four other hotel associations along with the Restaurant Workers’ Association and Free Hotel Workers’ Association.

The workers’ 20-point demand, including the ten per cent increase in salary, has already been agreed by the hotels in Kathmandu, Pokhara of Kaksi, Chitwan, Dhulikhel in Kavre and Narayanghat.

The hotel owners in Biratnagar had, however, not agreed to increase the salary of the hotel workers.

The hotel workers went on protest with their 20-point demand in Biratnagar and had warned that they would shut all big hotels indefinitely, if their demands were not met.

The workers had warned to shut down the hotels indefinately.

The hotels including Ratna, Swagatam, Star Moon, Moon, Sagarmatha Party Palace and Geetanjali had been closed by the agitating workers.
