House panel wants casinos operated far from cities

KATHMANDU: A parliamentary sub-committee has prepared a report, recommending the government to provide licences to run casinos only after determining separate places for them.

Today's meeting of the International Relations and Labour Committee under the Legislature-Parliament approved the report presented by sub-committee coordinator Min Bahadur Bishwokarma. The sub-panel was formed to carry out a study on casino operation.

On the occasion, members of the sub-committee also suggested the government to give permission to run casinos only after establishing a separate ‘casino village’ around five kilomteres away from the city area.

Sub-panel coordinator Bishwokarma said that the report has pointed out the need of moving ahead by making the casinos systematic though it was not an issue of pride to run the casinos.

He said, "It is necessary to assess its impacts on society. It is necessary to regulate, control and manage on time while giving permission to run the casinos."

The report has also suggested making casino owners responsible and ensuring welfare and rights, including timely and decent salary, for the workers.

The meeting also decided to give responsibility to lawmakers Bal Bahadur KC, Som Prasad Pandey and Shyam Shrestha to give a final touch to the report of the panel.

The Committee members also suggested that the Committee's directives should be implemented mandatorily and the Committee should be made stronger.
