KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 6

A total of 229 electric jeeps, cars, and vans worth Rs 680.5 million were imported through the Birgunj checkpoint in the first three months of the current fiscal year 2025/26.

Compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year 2024/25, the import of electric vehicles has risen sharply. During the same period last year, only 97 electric jeeps, cars, and vans worth Rs 144.9 million had been imported.

Officials attribute this surge to the growing public preference for electric vehicles and the poor road conditions along routes from the Chinese border, which have diverted trade through Birgunj.

In the first quarter of the current fiscal year, the government collected Rs 457.2 million in revenue from the import of electric jeeps, cars, and vans, according to Bishnu Prasad Gyawali, Chief Customs Administrator at the Birgunj Customs Office. He said the import of electric vehicles has witnessed a significant increase in recent months.

During the same period last fiscal year, only Rs 91.1 million in revenue had been collected from such imports.

Similarly, in the first three months of the current fiscal year, 2,194 electric motorcycles valued at Rs 287.9 million were imported, compared to 1,481 units worth Rs 211.7 million in the same period of the previous year.
