KATHMANDU: The Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) yesterday decided to stop granting permission to individuals to work as domestic workers in Lebanon.
The decision to this effect came in the wake of the death of two Nepali women workers on Wednesday night. It is said that negligence on the part of Nepali recruiting agencies to comply with their commitments caused their demise.
The agencies had promised to build shelter houses and keep track of the workers by calling them every 15 days.
As they have failed to abide by their commitment, Nepali workers are said to be in a vulnerable condition there.
In the last eight months, nine Nepali workers have committed suicide because of torture from their employers.
DoFE had granted permission to send women workers to Lebanon in May after commitment on part of recruiting agencies. Of the 17,000 Nepali workers in Lebanon, 95 per cent are women.
