Lights go out on expo on alternative energy

Kathmandu, February 15 :

The Alternative Energy Exhibition, with the slogan ‘Renewal Energy for Energy Conservation’, concluded here today.

The aim of the three-day exhibition was to create and promote awareness about the use of alternative energy in urban areas too. “There are many promotional programmes going on in the rural areas about alternative energy but it lacks publicity here in the city, where there is huge energy crisis,” said Narayan Adhikari, engineer at AEPC.

More than 50,000 people visited the three-day exhibition which basically focused on household

alternative energy. The expo had 82 stalls of Micro Hydro Power, Solar Energy System, Solar Home System, Biodiesel, Biobriquettes, and Biogas systems of energy. According to the organizers, the country is facing a huge energy crisis, therefore in this scenario if people get awareness about solar energy, it will certainly solve a part of the energy problem in the country.

“The year has been declared ‘Alternative Energy Year’, but we were lacking promotions here and now I think this exhibition has been successful in providing knowledge about alternative energy to a larger number of people of each group,” said Adhikari adding that most of the visitors were drawn towards solar appliances.

“People here have now started paying more attention to the use of solar power due to the growing power crisis. Earlier, tube lights were replaced by CFL tubes but now solar energy is the alternative,” said a representative of Energy International Pvt Ltd.

“More than 7000 people saw the solar appliances. The charge to set up a solar panel at home for just basic application is Rs 80,000 but doe extra appliances at home the charge is a

little higher,” said the Energy International Pvt Ltd representative.
