Mango output posts notable growth

Mango production has registered a remarkable growth in the eastern region this year. The transaction stood at above Rs 600 million. The regional agriculture directorate confirmed the report and said that the mango production has doubled this year in comparison to last year.

“The transaction was over Rs 600 million,” it informed. Tulsi Gautam, regional director, said,

“We have not hoped that the mango trade will record this high.” According to the regional directorate, Saptari and Siraha have produced more mangoes than they used to produce earlier. The reason: Farmers have started mango production in a commercial scale, it said.

In Saptari, the transaction stood at around Rs 215. 2 million this year. Similarly, Siraha came second and recorded the transaction of around Rs 189 million, the directorate said. Sunsari and Morang too have recorded a remarkable growth this year, the directorate said. However, Saptari district posted a record production this year by producing 30,750 metric tonnes of mangoes, while Siraha is at the second position with 27,000 metric tonnes. Udayapur, Morang, Sunsari, Sankhuwasabha and Jhapa also posted the record transaction this year with Rs 49.5 million, Rs 38.548 million, Rs 36.585 million, Rs 27.04 million and Rs 20 million, respectively, the regional agriculture directorate informed. But mango production in Solukhumbu was almost nil. Mangoes of Maldaha, Kalkattiya, Bombai, Dasahara varieties are in more demand. Last year there was no sufficient production. But this year the production was satisfactory, Tulsi Gautam, director in the regional agriculture directorate, said. As the mango production saw remarkable growth, its prices have also come down.
