KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 9

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel visited Ncell's Integrated Data Centre (IDC) in Nakkhu, Lalitpur on Monday, pledging government support to the telecom operator following damages suffered during the recent Gen Z protests.

Ncell Chairman Satish Lal Acharya and CEO Michael Foley briefed the minister on the company's services, economic contribution, and the impact of the protests, which caused an estimated loss of Rs 650 million and significant damage to facilities including the Ncell ICON building, according to the press release issued by the Ncell.

Minister Kharel acknowledged Ncell's contribution to Nepal's telecom sector and economy, assuring government cooperation to promote investment and improve service expansion, particularly in the Everest region and rural areas.

"I am saddened by the loss of around Rs. 650 million caused to Ncell during the Gen Z movement. The government is committed to creating an environment conducive for investment in Nepal, especially foreign direct investment (FDI). We should promote investment. The government is with Ncell," he said. He also welcomed Ncell's plan to launch a Gen Z Pack for students and introduce a scholarship initiative.

During the meeting, CEO Foley announced a nationwide scholarship programme for 100 SEE students annually, backed by a Rs 10 million fund. He said the upcoming Gen Z Pack would help address students' communication needs, adding that Ncell remains committed to supporting the Digital Nepal vision.

Ncell highlighted its two-decade contribution to Nepal's ICT sector, including nearly Rs 360 billion paid in taxes and fees, support for around 100,000 jobs, and over Rs 2 billion invested in social projects through CSR and the Ncell Foundation.
