NFTA urges PM Nepal to ameliorate situation

KATHMANDU: At the Nepal Foreign Trade Association (NFTA) thirty-third annual general meeting here yesterday, NFTA president Ashok Kumar Agrawal in an interaction with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal highlighted the economic problems faced by the country as well as the problems plaguing the business community.

“Recession has badly impacted the economic situation of the country. It has not only reduced remittance coming into Nepal but has also led to many people becoming jobless,” said Agrawal addressing the PM.

Speaking on the occasion, Agrawal also highlighted the problems that the business community in Nepal is facing due to load shedding, prevalent bandhs and the lack of conducive environment for investment opportunities.

The meeting mainly focussed on the economic depletion faced by the country. “The ever-increasing interest rates, imbalance in import and export and lack of a strong environment for investment and low productivity are some of the main issues that determine the country’s economic status,” added Agrawal.

Nepal Rastra Bank governor Yuvaraj Khatiwada also said there are issues in the economic sector which would be solved eventually “For the economic environment to be revived, the political and economic sectors need to stabilise, hydro-power sector needs to be looked into closely and work should start for recognising the sector that would prove to be most profitable,” said Khatiwada.

The association requested the PM that immediate action needs to be taken to reduce issues hampering economic growth of the country. It also voiced concern for Nepal Tourism Year 2011 due to ever-increasing problems faced by the country .
