PM against syndicate in construction sector
Kathmandu, September 20
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today said that the government will not tolerate any form of syndicate in any sector, including construction.
Inaugurating the 20th annual general meeting of the Federation of Contractors' Association of Nepal (FCAN) here today, Oli said that ‘cartels' in the construction or any other sector impedes the country's growth and development process, thus the government will not accept any such activity.
Similarly, he also informed that the government will scrap contracts with contractors found to be intentionally delaying projects. “Contracts will be renewed only if the contractor is able to present logical reasons behind the delay in project construction and completion.”
Stating that construction sector is a major driver of the country's development process, Oli urged contractors to be dedicated in project construction and quality works.
Against the backdrop of rising complaints regarding quality project works, PM Oli urged contractors to use quality construction materials in projects and warned of stern action if they are found to be cutting corners. “It is through delivering quality works and completing projects on time that contractors can regain their good image and acquire trust of the public and the government,” added Oli.
Meanwhile, Oli also assured that the government will introduce necessary laws and policies related to the construction and business sector and make existing policies contextual.
Bishnu Bhai Shrestha, president of FCAN, said that it is unfair to solely blame contractors for delay in projects and low quality works. “Majority of provisions in Public Procurement Act are unfavourable and causes delays in implementing the projects. The government should make necessary amendments in existing procurement policies,” he opined.
