The Nepal-China Tatopani border point — the second largest checkpoint of the country, which falls in Sindhupalchowk district — that was closed for nearly four years due to the devastating earthquakes of 2015 is slated to reopen from May 29.

Both Nepali and Chinese governments have deployed technical experts to reopen border as soon as possible.

Keshab Kumar Sharma, director general of the Department of Roads (DoR), said that both the governments are trying to reopen the Tatopani border from May 1, but it is likely that it will be open in a full-fledged manner only by the end of May.

He informed that though the construction works of the Miteri Bridge will take another one-and-a-half months to be completed, the remaining works are almost finished.

“Construction work of the dry port in Larcha and works related to upgradation of the road are in the final stage.

However, around 40 per cent works related to blacktopping of the road still remains,” he said. “Works related to building retaining walls along the Arniko Highway are ongoing.”

As per pact, Chinese side has completed upgrading the nine-kilometre-long road from Khasa to Miteri Bridge.

Chinese Railway Construction Company is doing the work at the dry port and bridge. Work to repair customs office, godown check yard, check posts, bank and residences is also underway.

A joint ministerial team of the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs inspected the affected areas on Tuesday.
