Kathmandu, May 28:

The two-year long training on exportable jewellery making training organised by Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association with support from Export Promotion Committee (EPC) concluded here. Altogether 44 participants involved in jewellery-making and marketing took part in the training. Punya Prasad Neupane, joint secretary at the ministry of industry, commerce and supplies, gave away certificates to the trainees. He said that trade has been gradually replacing foreign aid as fundamental driver of development. “We should focus on increasing the volume of trade, which will not only enhance development activities but also help reduce poverty in the country,” Neupane added. “Such a training will help create self-employment as well as boost exports,” said Naresh Chandra Lamichhane, executive director at EPC. He also said that export of silver products is rising, which is the fifth largest exportable item. It contributes 1.5 per cent of the total export of the country. Pancha Ratna Shakya, president of Handicraft Association of Nepal pointed out the need to translate skills learnt during the training into practical life to produce finished goods. He also criticised banks.

“The government should cooperate with private entrepreneurs providing soft loans,” said Tej Ratna Shakya, president, NEGOSIDA.
