KATHMANDU, JUNE 20

Workers engaged in trekking tourism at various levels will soon receive a noteworthy increment in their remuneration.

Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), the umbrella association of trekking agencies, has stated that considering the state of increasing prices and other factors in different sectors since the last revised salary five years ago and following a series of discussions with several trade unions, the wages have been increased.

According to Bimal Sapkota, general secretary of TAAN, this decision has been made following comprehensive consultations with various trade unions to address the challenges posed by the prevailing inflationary pressures and to enhance professionalism in the sector.

"The previous wage revision took place in 2018, highlighting a significant gap between the two adjustments. It is crucial to note that the market prices have skyrocketed over the past five years," he emphasised, underlining the urgency of wage revision to ensure fair compensation in line with the current economic realities.

"This step aims to uplift the livelihoods of workers and promote the sustainability of the trekking tourism industry in Nepal."

The new rate will see a substantial increase in the payment for the mountain guides, raising it to Rs 3,100 per day.

Likewise, Sapkota further informed that an assistant trekking guide will now receive Rs 2,800 per day, while a porter guide and porter will earn Rs 2,500 and Rs 2,400 per day, respectively.

The revised wages will come into effect from July 17.
