Camilla’s 60 surprises for Prince Charles

LONDON: Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Britain’s Prince Charles, plans to surprise her husband with 60 different birthday gifts when he turns 60 next month, media reports said on October 19.

The presents, which friends describe as a “labour of love”, include a pair of walking boots, a personalised fly fishing rod and his favourite episodes of The Goon Show. The duchess will also present her husband with a leather-bound volume of the couple’s love letters, according to a family friend, the Daily Mail reported.

Camilla, who has overseen plans for the more intimate second birthday party after their marriage, has also sourced a page from The Times on the day Charles was born — November 14, 1948 — and framed her wedding pictures along with photographs of Princes William and Harry as their children, said a source who has helped Camilla gather the presents.

“Camilla was at a loss over what to buy for Charles — he is the man with everything. In the end, she decided that she would abandon the idea of buying one huge gift and instead present him with a number of smaller gifts,” the friend said. “She has spent months getting all the things together and every item will mean something special to Charles.”

Charles’ birthday will be celebrated with a lavish state banquet at Buckingham Palace hosted by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. It will be followed by a party the next day for a few dozen of his closest friends at Highgrove, the prince’s residence in Gloucestershire.
