Encompassing variety

Kathmandu:

In her very first solo exhibition, Sandhya Maharjan has been able to showcase variety through her 42 creations. The exhibition titled ‘The Beginning of the Journey’ was inaugurated on September 17 by Gopal Baglay, Counsellor at the Indian Embassy, at the Nepal Art Council. Baglay said, “She has made a wonderful attempt, especially her landscapes are beautiful. I also noticed that all her portraits are of women from different regions of Nepal.”

The collection had variety in both subject and medium. She has captured the beautiful landscapes of different parts of Nepal like Balkot, Bajra Barahi as well as the day-to-day life of rural Nepali people. Meanwhile the women in her portraits are dressed in their traditional attire representing different cultures of Nepal. She has also depicted the flora and fauna of Nepal using different media like charcoal and oil in canvas. When it comes to media she has included oil in canvas and paper as well as watercolours along with charcoal.

Her colour treatment including the tonal effect is very realistic and helps to set the mood of the paintings. She has also included some figurative styled paintings showcasing the people of rural Nepal.

Artist Madan Chitrakar said, “Her paintings shows that she is very clear about the fundamentals involved while creating a painting. Her works are more academic and candid which is the best way to start a solo exhibition.”

The exhibition will continue till September 20.
