For a brighter today

In the neighbourhood adjoining the British camp at ManBhawan, retired Gurkhas from the British and Indian Armies have joined forces to form a community service society. They have a restaurant and a catering service called Gurkhas Brigade Boys Club. A part of the earnings of the restaurant and catering service, alongwith money raised from the families of ex-servicemen, is contributed to community service, which includes free health camps, blood donation camps, maintenance of the health post and the newly built park for children. The club has a soccer team and now owns a park with a playground for kids, a badminton court and a health post, which is open to all the residents in the neighbourhood. Doctors, especially from the British Camp, visit the health post volunteering their services every weekend.

Major Billy Thompson, British officer of the British camp, who is also the manager of the club, supervises the activities of the club. He says, “The club was initially designed for the sons of the British Gurkhas then serving in Hong Kong, but over the years even young persons from civilian families in the locality have become part of the club. Our club is also associated with the community service society. But it’s our conviction that not only the families of ex-servicemen but also the entire community should be the beneficiaries of the club and the community service society. Society is undoubtedly the best and first place to initiate a change.”
