Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe after Russia. It has magnificent architecture and art. The official language is Ukrainian, which forms with Russian and Belarusian languages.
The major event held in the country is the National Virtuoso. It is celebrated in May with musical theatrical performances focussing on national themes. Other festivals are Kiev Days in May, Crimean Stars in August and Feast of Assumption. The country also celebrates New Year and Orthodox Christmas Day on January 7.
One of the main attractions is Kiev. It is the mother city of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. The highlight of the city is the 11th century St Sophia Cathedral. It is the city’s oldest standing church. The other attraction is Odessa city. It is known for its collection of museums. The Archaeology Museum exhibits a collection of artefacts from early Black Sea civilisations including jewellery and coins dating from 1875.
Ukrainian cuisine mainly includes rye bread, potatoes and beet soup. The popular drink is Horilka – a wheat-based whiskey.
