Not so classic

Kathmandu

Classic is a musical love story that unravels the ‘out of this world’ love story of Samay (Aaryan Sigdel) and Dristri (Namrata Shrestha). It is no ordinary story but a tale of unconditional love and sacrifice of the visually impaired characters. And this cliché story is overwhelming though emanates committed performances.

Aspiring composer/singer Samay becomes blind, you will find the reason while watching the film. His musical dream is shattered and he doesn’t want to be a burden. So, he goes to a sangeet ashram (which seems like a resort) for visually impaired people. At the ashram, he meets visually impaired Dristi. She is musically talented and helps Samay accept his condition to move on to achieve his musical dream.

The film, which has a serious streak, could have been very sad and unbearable. Thanks to the director Dinesh Raut, he has drawn a line on this. The narration is smooth and not boring. But this doesn’t refrain some scenes and dialogues from being cringeworthy due to the clichés.

The Samay-Dristi love story is a tragic one. But Classic is not that extraordinary story of love that it would sweep you off your feet. It is more of a forced love story of sacrifice, what the film concentrates on.

Due to the characters and it is not an easy job to portray them on screen. Both Sigdel and Shrestha along with other actors, who have essayed the roles of visually impaired people, have tried their level best to look like someone who can’t see. But it has not been enough as they don’t look natural.

Meanwhile, Sigdel and Shrestha look like being possessed by aliens while depicting visually impaired people, especially Shrestha. But hats off, to pull off the sad and serious scenes that waver your heart. Also, the performance of supporting cast is not significant.

Music is an integral part of the film. But mediocre songs and music hit the sequences often — be it in the background or during the scene with lead characters practising or creating music. Blaring songs at times make you wish the songs didn’t come across.

If sacrifice and unconditional love is your thing, then Classic is for you.
