PEOPLESPEAK: When in doubt, opt for science
The advancement of modern science have been a boon to human civilisation. Science has made human life comfortable and the world has now become a global village. On the other hand, religion has always hindered human progress. A huge amount of money is spent on religious purposes In the name of religion, people spend huge amounts of money, which could be used for productive purposes. Religion has always promoted superstitions that obstruct human progress. Religion has prompted hostility between different faiths splitting human civilisation. It’s ironical that our country which has a population of less than three crore can accommodate 33 crore gods and goddesses.
Tilak Poudel, Pokhara
Increasingly materialistic modern lifestyle has created chaos. But there is always religion to lean on to whenever it leads on to a dead end. Religion has always helped in spreading the message of humanity and showing us the right track when human lives leads nowhere. The basic principle of all the religion is to spread love and peace in the society. In my opinion, though science is indispensable in modern lifestyle, we can’t do without religion.
Sweta Agrawal, Kalaiya Bara
For me religion and science are two sides of the same coin. I find many similarities between scientific principles and religious doctrines. If religion had not been there, nothing would have been there to prevent the chaos in the society. Religion without science is lameness and science without religion is blindness. Moreover, if science is the systematic study and of observations religion isn’t different.
Eak Prasad Duwadi
Both religion and science have utmost value in social development. One of the most significant aspects of religious thought is that it always speaks in favour of peace and truth. There are instances where religion and science contradict each other. Offering innocent animals to gods, piercing of tongue, taking cannabis, opium in the name of god, are some examples of religious supersttion that prevail in most societies. There are other such superstitious practices that are in no way commendable. It is good to have faith in religion but when it jeoppardises humanity, scientific reasoning must be made. Science is necessary to get over misconceptions that have prevailed still in our society while science without religion would only endanger the future of humanity.
Deepak Karki
There are many mysteries that science has never been able to unravel. Surprisingly, religion has an explanation. I would prefer to lean on religion, when they seem to contadict each other. Science is an emerging field whereas religion has existed down the ages. The staunch supporters of science are blind to the other aspect that makes lives worthwhile. Religion leads to enlightenment that scince can never expected to do.
Ashok Raj Pokharel
It’s true that religion was born with man while science developed with the human faculties of observation only in the Nineteenth century. Darwin’s theory of Evolution gave a crushing blow to the religious superstitions and thus, science opened a new chapter of reason in the realm of human thought. Religion is mainly a phenomenon of heart, the main weapon in its armory being faith, while science totally rests on reason. While religion speaks in poetic language of parables and metaphors, science puts forth its truth, concepts and formulate in clear terms. Unlike religion, science is concerned with the general conditions that regulate the physical
phenomena. All material achievements that mankind has earned till date are the gifts of science. Man’s social development from the Paleolithic age to this era of computers, he owes much to science. Hence, I would like to put my trust in science in areas where science and religion contradict each other.

Modern science and technology have changed our lives in many ways. Aeroplanes, cars, communication satellites, computers, plastics, and television are to name but a few of the scientific and technological inventions that have transformed human life. Science covers the broad field of knowledge that deals with observed facts and the relationships among those facts, but religion is not related to the fact findings. It is an organised system of beliefs, ceremonies, practices and worships that center on one supreme God or other Deity. Such ideas and beliefs cannot be scientifically proved. There is no test that tells whether a philosophical system is ‘right.
