PEOPLESPEAK: Young or old, one can learn from the other
Learning has nothing to do with age as such. You can be a school going kid or a retired professor at Harvard, but then you’re never too old to learn about new things. We have this misconception that the younger generation knows nothing, leave aside the younger people teaching their elders. Keeping up with the technological advancements, the younger generation is far more prepared for the answers that the predecessors don’t have. The older generation might have the experience but that doesn’t mean that they have the best solutions to our problems.
— Sonia Puri
It is not only time but also different circumstances that we’ve been exposed to that brings in all the difference. The experience that the old generation brags of hardly has any relevance to the younger generation, though they wouldn’t accept the fact. They could stay complacent with their experiences, but they shouldn’t remain blithely ignorant harping on about their mindless exploits.
— Rajin Maharjan
Unlike in the past, there are many things that younger generation has taught the seniors. Indeed, the older generation has experienced more than what we’ve seen. But times have changed and their experience hardly matters today. The younger generation is far more talented and capable to handle their affairs. The senior members of society should not shy away and be eager to learn from the younger generation.
— Deepa Singh
There are many things that children can teach their elders. For instance, little children can teach their elders to use household gadgets indispensable to modern life. It is absolutely ridiculous to believe that children are ignorant and can’t teach their elders.
— Eklaxmi Nepal
In an age of technological innovations, it’s foolhardy to assume the role of Know-it-all. Young people possess an ability to learn new concepts and update themselves with the latest innovations. In contemporary society, it’s the younger generation who are the vanguards and old people should learn from them.
— Sumit Pokhrel
‘Teach’ is a not a politically correct word. It distorts the entire process of learning and learning attitude. Young people are more energetic, optimistic about future and are quick to adapt to changes. The level of these abilities goes down with age and the attitude to adapt with change is an extremely crucial element of life. Otherwise someone would have been the richest man if Bill Gates had been complacent with his first version of Windows. Youth are tomorrow’s hope and they deserve a better treatment than just being viewed as radicals.
— Prajwol Bhattarai
I don’t think we can teach older people because they are more experienced with life’s ways. Yes, sometimes we can be more intelligent but that doesn’t mean we are more efficient in handling life’s vicissitudes. On the contrary, there are a number of things that we need to learn from them.
— Navaraj
There’s nothing that the young people can’t do, while on the other hand there are a lot of things, which elders need to learn. The old people have to learn to live with the ways of the younger generation.
— Binita Risal
It’s true that younger generation can teach their elders but they can’t be experts in every aspect of life. As older people are more experienced they are better equipped to face life’s uncertainties. Younger people can indeed teach their elders, but they can’t be the masters in all aspects of life.
— Jyotsana Parajuli
I disagree with the idea that only elders know everything and children do not. Elders definitely are experienced and are aware of life’s little follies but once out of their world they’re hardly aware of how the world’s changed. For many of them IT, the gift of modern science might not mean a thing and it’s often children who teach them. Taking into consideration these facts, each generation has been passing the baton of knowledge and both of them have been learning from each other.
— Ambika Pandey
Learning is a continuous process and we keep on learning till the end of life. We youngsters must always respect the opinions of our elders but of course not ignoring our discretion. Elders preach to their utmost abilities but ironically fail to make their philosophy applicable to their own lives. Elders remain pig-headed as they deem they to be superiors but there’s really a lot they can learn from youngsters.
— Himanshu Singh Pradhan
It’s true that most lecturers learn more from their students as they are directly involved to carry out their research work. The old can provide worthy lesson to the young — but the talented young also can offer valuable knowledge.
— Rajendra Lama
Today’s youngsters may have the track of all the recent developments, still no mind is an ocean. And for that matter, no one is perfect in his own right. As we have many things to learn from our elders, so have the younger ones to teach their elders.
— Suzee
Old people may be more educated, more experienced and thus more knowledgeable than young people, but still there are many things that young generation can teach the old. Young generation may not have much experience or knowledge about many things, but they may have some knowledge of quite a few new things. For example, most old people are scared of the computer or mobile set, and never learn to operate them, whereas you give a computer or mobile set to a child, and s/he will be able to operate them within minutes. Therefore, both the generations should respect and exchange each other’s knowledge, and learn from them.
— Jaya
First and foremost, the young people can pull the old people out of the superstitious mire and help them adjust to the ways of modern living. The developments taking place elsewhere would be the source of inspiration, if only the young people enlightened them about it.
— Devi Pokhrel
In rural areas senior citizens are proudly taking classes from their grandsons and daughters. My grandmum is very old but she never shies away from asking questions. It’s not possible for people to know everything and it doesn’t matter if youngsters enlighten their elders about things they’re not aware of.
— Dhruba Sharma
The problem is not that the younger people can’t teach their elders but the fact that the elders never lend their ears. In my opinion, young people are more creative, active and talented. If the elder have any advantage at all over the younger ones is that they are more experienced, or that’s what they claim to be.
— Subhaya Basnyat
Though older people have more practical knowledge, when it comes to dealing with life’s barbs there still remains a lot they need to learn from the young ones. As today’s youth know more about recent developments, they are extra knowledgeable and the older people need to learn from them.
— Pravin Rimal
Not everyone is perfect. Everyone has some thing to learn and to teach, irrespective of age, sex, or religion.
— Prajesh Bhakta Pradhananga
Even as the society moves ahead, it’s often difficult to adopt new concepts. In the context of our society where religious norms and values are deeply entrenched, it will be more than difficult to convince old people. Old people should be more open to embracing new ways of living, learning from youngsters.
— Casarita Shreshta
The young are the symbols of creativity and imagination whereas the old are full of
experiences. The old can teach the young about their past experiences, but the young can also teach the old how to move ahead with changing times.
— Uday Pariyar
Though older people have gone through different phases of life there are many things younger people can teach their elders.
— Prakriti Thapaliya
