PICK OF THE WEEK: Heaviest panda cub, and twins born
BEIJING: China welcomed five newborn giant panda cubs this week, including one hefty baby and two sets of twins. On August 7, the heaviest panda cub born in the history of China’s artificial breeding programme was delivered at the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Centre, Sichuan. The cub weighs 218 grams. The birth of the biggest panda baby wasn’t the only record set that day. The male cub’s mother, Zhang Ka, also set a record for the longest delivery. Twin giant pandas, Qi Zhen and Qi Yuan, each gave birth to their own sets of twins. They were born on August 6 and 7 at the Chengdu Giant Panda Reproduction and Research Centre. Giant pandas are one of the world’s most endangered species.
