Refrigeration basics

KATHMANDU: Storing food in refrigerators is no doubt a good way to keep them for a longer period of time, but then one should know how long a certain food item should be kept even in the freezer. And plus the different areas of refrigerator are made for different food items. Here are a few quick tips on proper refrigeration.

• The most important thing in refrigeration is proper air circulation. So leave the air vents exposed. Also leave some space between items to allow the air to circulate.

• The doors of the refrigerator and freezer are the warmest parts, so use the shelves in them for least perishable products like soda and condiments.

• The basket at the bottom or crisper is for fruits and vegetables. Put a clean absorbent paper towel at the bottom of the crisper. This will not only make cleaning up easier but will also absorb excess moisture and keep vegetables and fruits fresh for a longer time.

• Never keep uncovered food in the refrigerator. Use zip lock bags or containers with lids to store open food items.

• Wrap foods in foil before putting them in zipper bag while storing them in the freezer.

Place for each item

•Milk should always be put on a shelf, and never on the door.

•Do not use the plastic egg containers that are there in the refrigerators. They stop air circulation, which will spoil the eggs faster. Fresh eggs will last up to three weeks if stored in the correct way

•Condiments are more prone to cross contamination. So always put a clean knife or fork, which has not touched other food, into the jar.
