Superstitions

Beliefs that are formed without any reasonable basis can be called superstitions. Almost everybody fears Friday the thirteenth, crows, the hooting of owls and cats crossing the roads. All these are supposed to be associated with some kind of bad luck. Some hotels in the world do not have the room marked ‘13’ because guests are reluctant to stay in the 13th room. Nobody knows how much of these superstitions really bring about the omen that they are believed to do. There are virtually no scientific studies carried out to confirm or deny them. So to be on safe side even modern people like us keep on following them and they become the way of life. However, here are some beliefs, which I think, should not be taken lightly. For example, the appearance of a comet is thought to be a sign of war. In fact, history tells us that disasters do occur simultaneously with a comet’s appearance. Full moon seems to be associated with lunacy, which we read in the tales of werewolves, but there are a number of happenings enough to support this fact. The lunatic behavior shown by the schoolgirls in some schools in our country in recent times though termed as ‘mass hysteria’ by doctors could be cured only by spiritual means. Although most of us are antagonist and refuse to accept the existence of such supernatural powers, we are more or less governed by some beliefs or so called superstitions. So, I think it is ridiculous to deny all of such beliefs. Beliefs are stronger than reason. After all, we hesitate to argue some of the strange beliefs, don’t we?
