The voice that captured hearts

• Muglan le bhuleko chhaina was Baraily’s fitting encore

Kathmandu:

It was an evening we had all looked forward to... an evening with one of yesteryear’s stars of the Nepali music world, none other than the one voice that reminds one of the ‘baruli lagne’ days — Daisy Baraily.

She was here on the invitation of nepa-laya to kickoff the second phase of nepa-laya’s Paleti series named Paleti Shrinkhala.

The charm of listening to Baraily live — for the first time for many of us and after many long years for others — was something that many of us had not dreamt of. The show was also Baraily’s debut solo performance.

And, of course, she did not disappoint any of us.

The 18 songs that she delivered was one treat after another and the ease with which she sang really made one realise that one has to be blessed and born with such a voice to be able to produce so many emotions in all of us. From awe to admiration to open applause — Baraily deserved it all.

As an encore she performed Muglan le bhuleko chhaina, written and composed by Saran Pradhan. She dedicated Phulako thunga bahera gayo to late Tara Devi, and Nepali gaurab to late Aruna Lama.

And people were not at all stingy with their praises with composer Karma Yonjan and litterateur Manjul leading the pack of hailing her prowess as a singer.

Accompanying her were her husband Chandan Lomjal, whose love for music was evident in the way he was playing the instruments and enjoying every moment of the performance. Daughter Bimochana is no less a good singer and she also earned herself some fans this January 28 evening.

Nepa-laya’s Paleti series is an attempt by the organisers to bridge the gap between the artistes and people and bring them closer. Well, not to go overboard, they have been successful.
