THE WORLD THIS WEEK: No walkathon for Budhia
A five-year-old Indian boy, who hit headlines last year when he attempted a 70 km marathon, has been banned by police from taking part in a 500 km walk. Loads of officers blocked a road in Bhubaneswar to stop Budhia Singh joining the walkathon. They said the ban was necessary because they were worried about his health. In May 2006, child welfare officers got worried about Budhia when he collapsed after running 65 km in the blazing sun. He’d been running non-stop for seven hours and two minutes. Budhia’s mum, coach Biranchi Das, and about 50 supporters held a sit-in protest on the road.
