Theatre scaling new heights
Kathmandu:
Nepali theatre group Aarohan, Gurukul has been selected for ‘Contacting the
World (CTW) 2008’, a pioneering international theatre project based in the UK. The project aims to change the way young people communicate with each other globally.
Around 100 different theatre companies had been chosen for this project out of which only 12 countries made it to the finals.
From the 12 countries there are around 150 young people participating. The other companies who have made it to the finals are Project Phakama from London, Positive Impact from Liverpool, Space 3 from Manchester, The Other Side of the Mirror from Poland, Die Zwiefachen from Germany, Tiyatro 0.2 from Turkey, Trupe Teatro Afro Reggae from Brazil, Evam Youth Forum from India, Creative Arts Team from USA, Al Harah Theatre from Palestine and Feet from Zambia.
Among the 12 countries, each country will be twined with one other country. They will be exchanging ideas and create something new with what they have learnt from their twin group. Aarohan’s partner is Die Zwiefachen from Berlin, Germany. CTW company members will be exchanging ideas by online social networking, airmail, audio visual samples and will also be visiting each other’s countries to exchange ideas and experiences.
Seven young theatre artistes from Aarohan hope to create a totally new kind of work with the skills and knowledge they have and from what they learn from Die Zwiefachen. After the completion of the work, it will be shown in Kathmandu and then in Liverpool. Besides the final work, theatre workshops will also be held in both countries.
On December 1, Ananda Breed, an artiste facilitator from CTW met the artistes of Aarohan and she will be facilitating the programme. The final performances will be shown in Kathmandu in June and in Liverpool in July.
